Lake Havasu Municipal Court is Moving
Lake Havasu Court is finally getting its own court building. I have been practicing law in Lake Havasu since 2010. During this time, Lake Havasu Municipal Court has rented space from Mohave County - the City Court and Justice Court have always been in the same building. The City Court handles hearings on Thursdays and the Justice Court handles hearings on Fridays. While this may sound acceptable to outsiders, it creates an influx of cases on a single day. There have been times when I've gone to court and there are close to 50 cases being handled in a single day. This is not the most efficient way of handling criminal cases. It's my opinion that the lack of court space results in the Lake Havasu City Prosecutor's Office trying to resolve cases in the fastest way possible. When I say fast, I certainly don't mean fairest. Often times, I feel as if people are arrested and forced into bad plea offers before they can speak with a defense attorney. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for the the City prosecutors, Charles Yager and Kris Rienfeld, but I believe people wise enough to plead not guilty at their Initial Appearances are at an advantage, because they have the opportunity to seek legal counsel.
I've worked out at Havasu Fitness many times - it was my go to gym in Havasu. I will definitely miss working out there, but Lake Havasu Municipal Court is long overdue for its own building. I can't wait to roll up my sleeves and get to work fighting for my clients at the new complex. Matt-
